Healthy Diet

There are 3 principles in Healthy Diet. "Local, Seasonal and Natural." We couldn't enjoy foods that we consume everyday unless we have all the technologies which supports production, process and transportation. About a few century ago, all we could eat was local, seasonal and natural foods. Now we have too many choice of food which is not traditional and might not be good for us. Enjoying those foods should be limited to keep our body healthy. 

Local: People are searching for healthy food everywhere. They may found certain berry from different climate and put it in their everyday diet list. Local food means that we should consume everyday food grown locally or from similar climate. Something from different area should be special food, not to be consumed everyday. 

Seasonal: Our body needs different nutrienst depending on season. During the summer, we need something to cool down and during the winter we need those to warm up. We don’t need summer fruits such as melons and berries during the winter. These days, we can buy any kind of fruits and vegies in any season now. Consuming unseasonable food everyday might be a waste of money and can be unhealthy habit. 

Natural: We may consume too many processed foods these days. All we can buy at the market is processed in a certain degree.
Even fruits and veggies are treated with certain chemical to maintain freshness and appearance. Choose minimally processed food first. If you choose packaged food, read the labels. If you find ingredients, which you don’t keep in your kitchen, you’d better limit consumption of those products. There are few more details. 

1. Choose the product with simpler ingredient.
2. Wash well and eat as a whole: whole small fish, fruits and veggies with skin on, whole grains and legumes
3. Limit sugary drinks including juice. Milk and soy milk too. 
4. Limit cheap meat. They usually contain artificial hormones and antibiotics.
5. Limit supplements. They are not everyday food. Use it wisely.

When you're thinking about food safety these days, you might conclude that there are nothing to eat. Don't worry. Our body has ability to remove and neutralize toxins and impurities if you don't consume too much. Also, Fibers help to remove those effectively. Eat responsibly and enjoy the food. If your body is well balanced physically and emotionally, you don't need to worry about all the issues.


Constitutional Diet

From a point of view in Korean Constitutional Medicine, our body type can be classified into 4 different types depends on the major imbalance of your organs. It also can be divided into 2 subtypes which makes eight different body types. Depending on the type, food selection should be different because each food is supporting certain organs as it goes into our body and we don’t want to make those imbalances worse. Meat and root veggies are usually supporting Lung and digestive system whereas seafood and leafy veggies are supporting Liver and Kidney system. Here’s the characteristics and food list for each body type.

  1. Liver/Gallbladder type (Carnivore)
    1. Overactive Liver system with Underactive Lung system
    2. Dominant body shape: Abdominal
    3. Need: beef, potatoes, wheat, root veggies, mushrooms
    4. Avoid: seafood, leafy veggies

  1. Lung/Large intestine type (Vegetarian)
    1. Overactive Lung system with Underactive Liver system
    2. Dominant body shape: Head & shoulder
    3. Need: leafy veggies, seafood, buckwheat
    4. Avoid: all meat, wheat, root veggies

  1. Pancreas/Stomach type (Cool food)
    1. Overactive Digestive system with Underactive Kidney system
    2. Dominant body shape: Chest
    3. Need: pork, seafood, leafy veggies
    4. Avoid: chicken, lamb, hot spices, apple, oranges

  1. Kidney/Urinary bladder type (Warm food)
    1. Overactive Kidney system with Underactive Digestive system
    2. Dominant body shape: Hip
    3. Need: chicken, lamb, hot spices, ginseng
    4. Avoid: pork, shellfish, ice
